"Chocolat" - ***1/2

This year's last card of Miramax, who’s got to have a big Oscar party every single year. However, this film proves that a decent director and decent casts do not always create a great film. Yes, it's the director, Swedish Lasse Hallstorm, who saved Miramax from the disaster of "Talented Mr. Reply" last year with "Cider House Rules". Then, here comes Great Britain's Judi Dench, who is always promising, and "The English Patient" Oscar winner, forever French Lorita, Juliette Binoche, and additionally, the wild & good-looking, Johnny Depp who brings younger audiences. What a perfect pitch!
But, they forgot about that there are some cast's natural chemicals, which do not always work by pushing with their "Miramaxy" power.

The screenplay was pretty bad to divide people into good and bad. It was too predictable that what Reynaud would turn to Juliette Binoche in the end, which is OK, but the point was "how to"... It was so stupid. I couldn't even laugh.

For me, it was so interesting to see Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin co-stared again. When they were together in The Unbearable Lightness of Being", the role of Lena Olin was saving Juliette Binoche's role. However, it was Juliette's turn this time. Lena Olin looked pretty much the same as 12 years ago, but Juliette Binoche totally different, looks much bigger and much more beautiful.

I wasn't impressed by other casts very much. Judi Dench was not bad but "the 8 min performance" in "Shakespeare in Love" was much more memorable.
The daughter was from "Ponett", at whom I was so surprised that she is grown up so fast and speaks English perfectly. Johnny Depp was... just OK. I kind of liked Judi Dench's daughter (nothing more than beautiful, though) and her son.

One thing I thought Miramax did something un-fair was that they showed a couple of "un-used scenes” in the preview. Where’ve the lines gone from the scene when Juliette Binoche invites Johnny Depp for the first time? What about Judi Dench whispers love to Johnney Depp? What about the shot Juliette Binoche sleeps with Johnny Depp? Where have they gone??? I wonder…

I think the biggest mistake, which Miramax made was that they didn't get the co-sponsored with a big chocolate company like GODIVA (they tried but couldn't?). The table top part was great and it made me run into a deli to get a chocolate right after I saw this film (^_^;)

去年「リプリー」の大失敗で、危うくオスカー・パーティを開けなくなりそうになってしまったミラマックスの救世主「サイダー・ハウスルールズ」を監督したL＝ハルストウムによるヨーロピアン・ロマンティック・コメディ。今回目玉にしていたミラマックスのプリンス・マット＝デーモン＆グエネスの後釜として新しくミラマックスのプリンセスとなったP＝クルズ主演の「All the Pretty Horses」がまたも大ゴケしてしまった為に、今年もハルストウム監督に頼るしかないミラマックスなのでした(^_^;)。でも、良い監督、良いキャストを揃えてヨーロピアン・テイストで味付けすれば、常にいい映画が出きるってもんじゃないことを証明してしまったのがまさにこの作品。基本的なストーリーは、規律や規範を厳格に守っているフランスの田舎町に、おいしいチョコレートを作る旅母子がやってきて人々の心を開いていくというもの。

まずキャストについて。「存在の耐えられない軽さ」で１２年前に共演したジュリエット＝ビノッシュとレナ＝オリンが全く正反対の関係で再び共演したことが、私にとっては一番興味深かったです。１２年経っても殆ど変わらないレナ＝オリンに比べ、ジュリエット＝ビノッシュがどれだけ変わってしまったことか…（いい意味でも、悪い意味でも）。ジュディ＝デンチはいつものように巧かったけど、「恋に落ちたシェイクスピア」で見せたかの有名な８分パフォーマンス（彼女は、たった８分間の出番でオスカーを獲得してしまいました）程ではなかったかな。ジョニー＝ディップはまぁまぁ。それにしても、娘役のVictoire Thivisol（あの映画「ポネット」の女の子）は、突然成長して、突然流暢な英語を喋っているのでびっくりしてしまいました。他には、「ダンサー・イン・ザ・ダーク」でジェフ役をやったピーター＝スティモアなんかも出演しています。

この映画の一番の敗因はその脚本。善玉・悪玉の構図が単純すぎるし、ストーリーも先が見えすぎ。結末が分かるのはいいとしても、その過程がお粗末なんじゃ話になりません。あと余談ですが、アメリカ版の予告編には、実際の本編中には出てこない場面やセリフがいくつもあり、これはルール違反なんじゃないかとけっこう憤慨してしまった私です。

最後に。ミラマックスはこの映画で絶対にGODIVAとかどっかの大手チョコレート会社とタイアップするべきだったなぁと私は思います（しようとしたけど出来なかったのかも？）。本編中目白押しのチョコレート・シズルカットはやっぱり魅力的に撮ってあって、情けなくも、この映画を観終わった後、すぐさまチョコレートを買いに走ってしまった私なのでした(^_^;)。

"O Brother, Where Art Thou?" 「Oh, ブラザー！」 - ***3/4

I could say this is one of my favorite films of year 2000 "VISUALLY". I could say it is one of the "FUNNIEST" films of year 2000. Yes, it was cute, funny, visually brilliant, but that was all.
I don't even know what else I can write about this film. If I were a buyer of films distributing to Japan. I've got a millions of sales words, though. Yeah, it's Coen brothers. Yeah, here comes George Clooney, who is cutest and sexiest ever. Yeah, it's based on "Odyssey", which tickles the academy-liberal-hippies generation.

But Gee... I don't have any more words for this film (even in Japanese). I don't know what was missing... Tension, passion, or enthusiasm??? Like what I feel to Spike Lee's recent films, their film became too neat. When I'm laughing at seeing them (it was so cute, though), I found myself I was laughing. It was not I couldn’t help laughing but I was laughing at it in conscious, you know? I have no idea what's the difference between a funny film you cannot help laughing and a funny film with skills or some technique. I think Cohen brothers got too skillful, and George Clooney was too faithful to them, which made me realized "he was acting".

I think it's a kind of film, which hardly makes you either love or hate, which I felt exactly the same way, when I saw “The Hudsucker Proxy” or “The Big Lebowski”. Anyway, they’ll have three films coming in a row up to year 2000. I hope they’ll be like another “Barton Fink” or “Fargo”.

ビジュアル的、ユーモア的には、去年好きだった映画のほぼ筆頭に挙げてもいいかもしれないくらいの映画です。でもやっぱり何かが足りなかった…。最近のスパイク＝リー映画に感じているのと同じ様なことかもしれません。「巧いんだけど、ハングリー精神というか、その分情熱が失われてしまった様な…」。
アメリカでは興行的に全く当たっていないものの、日本ではそこそこにヒットするんじゃないでしょうか。何てったってコーエン兄弟だし、ジョージ＝クルーニーめちゃめちゃカワイイし（勿論おかしい）、「いちご白書」世代の心をくすぐる“オデッセイ”を下敷きにした話だし…。あ、また後まわしになりましたが、このお話は、南部ミシシッピィを舞台にした３人のちょっと間抜けな脱走犯（でも、歌がめちゃウマ）のロード・ムービー。おそらく「オデッセイ」をちゃんと予習してから観ると、さらに面白いんだと思いますが、予備知識はなくでも勿論OK。

ジョージ＝クルーニーは、「アウト・オブ・サイト」「スリー・キングス」やこの映画の様に、たがのはずれた役の方がずっと味が出ていていい感じ。ただこの映画では、“気合”というか“意気込み”が見えすぎて、ちょっと興ざめしてしまったかもしれません。「アウト・オブ・サイト」なんかの方が、本人楽しんで演っている様に見えたのでこの作品よりは好きでした。ジョン＝タトウーロは、いつもの様に堅実な演技で文句なし。ティム＝B＝ネルソンはかわいかったけど、何だか漫画のキャラクターみたいでしたね(^_^;)。

「ビック・リボウスキー」から２年のブランクがあったコーエン兄弟、実は2002年の終わりまでにナントあと３作の映画制作が控えています。彼等の作品はやっぱり好きだから、この先の作品はもっと「巧い」だけじゃなく、「バートン・フィンク」や「ファーゴ」の時の様に、彼等の映画に対する愛や情熱を見せてくれる作品であることを祈っています。

"Chicken Run" 「チキンラン」- ***1/2

日本では200１年４月より公開になります。

まずこの作品、各新聞・雑誌などの批評家達から軒並み2000年の映画ベスト１０にランクインされていたので、これまた期待が大きすぎてしまいました(^_^;)。確かに質はかなり高いし、けっこう面白いんですけどね(^_^;)。でも脚本で言ったら、私は「トイ・ストーリー」の方がよく書けていたと思います。
ストーリー展開ということで言うと、私はけっこう日本のアニメ大作に見慣れちゃっているからなぁ。それは宮崎駿作品に限らず、古くは「宇宙戦艦ヤマト」とか「銀河鉄道９９９」とか（古すぎ？？？）、アニメ映画と言えばそういった壮大なストーリーを思い浮かべてしまう私にとって、やっぱりコレはお子様向けのアニメでした。

勿論こちらでは「シンプソンズ」を始め、見た目は子供向けのアニメでも内容的には大人も楽しめる（時には大人しかわからないセリフもある）アニメというのが沢山あって、この作品でもウィットに富んだセリフが沢山出てきます。でもこの映画、中盤はちょっとたるんだし、最後のオチもちょっと甘かった様な気がしてしまいました。

この作品が評価されている最大のポイントは、そのクレィアニメのディテールだと思います。確かに精密によく創られているし、ふ〜ん、今はここまで出来るんだなぁと思わされる所も沢山あります。でも、技術だけじゃ「ツイスター」と変わらないじゃないですか？？？やっぱりお話はキチンとしてないとね。

それから、このお話がスピルバーグの力を借りてこれだけの予算で映画化されるに至ったのは、おそらくこのお話の舞台である養鶏場が暗にユダヤ人強制収容所を表しているからなのだと思います。
あ、またストーリーが後まわしに…(^_^;)。これは簡単に言えば、養鶏場（ナチの強制収容所とそっくりに作られています）から逃げ出そうと試みる鶏達の物語。それまで卵を産めばのうのうと生活出来ていた鶏達も、新しい管理人がチキンパイで商売を始めようとしたからさぁ大変…命の危険を感じて逃げ出さなくっちゃってな具合です。ま、話が単純なのはいいんですけどね。アニメのディテールにこだわるのと同じ様に、ストーリーのディテールにもこだわって欲しかったなぁ。

最後にこの映画が日本で公開になった時、気になることが一つあります。本編のセリフの中に“Chicken”に引っ掛けたセリフが沢山出てくるのですが（英語でChickenは、“弱虫”という意味にも使います）、このかけ言葉を日本語に訳す時にどうするのか、もしご覧になる方がいらっしゃったら、その辺にも注目してみて下さいね。

This film is not only wining all animated film awards but also getting into so many years 10 best films. So... yeah, I guess I expected too much as usual.
Of course, the quality is pretty high and the detail of the clay’s crafting are amazing. But I didn't particularly find great things about screenwriting in this. I think the screenplay of "Toy Story" was a lot more detailed and organized.

Yes, there are tons of lines, which only adult people can enjoy. And the Chicken Farm is definitely implying the Nazi concentration camp (I bet that was the reason why this story got a deal with Dreamworks), which has various deep meanings inside. However, the love story was too simple and the end was too easy. I wish they took more time to develop the spin of the story even for an animation film. You know, like Japanimation by Hayao Miyazaki.

If you make just a high skilled technology film, you are just making another "Twister". Hope they'll make their next film with more aliving characters.
