私にとっては５年越しで待ち続けた、台湾出身のアン＝リー監督が描く中国大陸アクション絵巻。ことの始まりは1995年。アン=リーが前からやりたかったという中国の古典「臥虎蔵龍」が台湾でようやく解禁になり、アン＝リーとはデビュー作から組んで来たプロデューサーのJames Schamusが脚色することに。当時彼は、私の通っていた大学院映画科の教授でもありました（私の奨学金の推薦状も書いてくれた有難〜い先生です）。で、たまたま彼と同じ大学宿舎に住むやはり当時博士課程の学生Robbinが、原文の中国語をJamesの為に英語翻訳することになったのです（もちろん全文ではなくシノプシス程度）。私はと言えば、これ又たまたま当時Robbinに日本語を教えていたので、企画段階からこの映画の内容についてはだいたい聞いていました。
まずは内容的なことについて。原作からは随分とアレンジしてありました。 基本的な骨子は、伝説の剣「グリーン・ディステニー」を持つムーバイ＆今は亡きムーバイの親友と婚約関係にあったシューリンという女剣士（でも普段はおしとやか！）、そしてかつて砂漠で出会った盗賊ロンとの想いを胸に秘めたまま政略結婚させられそうになるイェンという２組のカップルのラブストーリー。このイェンがまたムーバイやシューリンに負けず劣らずの女剣士（原作での主役はイェン。シューリンはこの映画の為につけ足されたキャラクターです） 。これにイェンへ武術を教えたムーバイの宿敵Jude Fox（日本版での役名は何だったのでしょうか？）が加わり、全遍を通してのワイヤー・アクションが繰り広げられます。
全体的な感想。う〜ん、構成的にちょっとしまりのなかった感じがしてしまいました。この作品のように、3人以上で共著する脚本には必ず構成的なモンダイが出てきてしまいます。一緒に観た友人は、中盤の砂漠シーンが間延びしていたと言っていました。私の場合、そこは好きだったんですけどね。でも、最初と最後のテンポがいまイチというか、なにか「”テンション”もしくは”ゾクゾク”が足りなかった」といった方が正確かな。２組とも「許されぬ（？）恋」ってことで、静かな関係のはいいんだけれども、静かなりにテンションのある心のつながりっていうのは、見せようと思えば見せられたと思う（特にムーバイとシューリンの二人に関して）。
勧善戒悪でないキャラクター構成はもの凄くいいと思うのですが、イェンのキャラクターがちょっと中途半端に感じられてしまったし。別に盗人だろうが何だろうが、若さなりの過ちを犯そうが何だっていいんだけれど、どこか一本筋が通ってない気がしてしまって…。これがどこかに何か強烈なモノを秘めていればいいのですが、それにも欠けていた気がしたし、終盤に至るムーバイとの顛末もちょっとお粗末だったような。（キビシすぎ？^_^;）
でもって、残念ながらラストの終わり方にはちとがっかりしてしまいました。「え？コレで終わり〜？？？」って感じで（しかもUS版ではこのラストシーン、予告編ですでに観せちゃってたんですよね。そりゃ〜なおさら興覚めダワって）。ポエティックなのはいいんだけど、もうヒト工夫欲しかった…（やっぱり事前の期待が大きすぎるってのはダメですね ^_^;）。
キャストについて。ムーバイ役・チョウ＝ユンファの出番が少なかったよ〜〜〜。確かに原作では、もっと出番少なかったらしいんですけど 。シューリンへの想いだけでなく、イェンに対する想い＝先輩or師匠意識（？）が俄然弱いのが気になりました。これは完全にアン＝リーのせいですね。彼の描くキャラクターはいつも腰が引きすぎ〜！逆にシューリン役のミッシェル＝ヨーに関しては、普段のおしとやかさがアクション・シーンとのギャップになってうまく機能していた気がしますけど（広東語がネイティブの彼女には、北京語のセリフを喋るのはけっこう大変だったみたいです。それが彼女のセリフまわしを余計トロくしてた感じ ^_^;）。でもやっぱり、ミッシェル＝ヨーといえばアクションですよね。スタントなしのそのゴージャスなアクション！！！それでいて美人で演技までキチンと出来ちゃうんですから、もうカンペキでございます。m（＿）m
チャン＝ツイィーもいいですね〜。演技の方はやっぱりまだまだだけど、アクション・シーンめちゃ頑張ってましたよ（180度開脚もやってた！）。勿論部分的にはスタントの人がやっていましたが、明らかに彼女がやっていた部分でも、その剣さばきはなかなかのモノでした。これからますます期待の女優さんですね。ロー役のチャン＝チェンは、まぁ…チャーミングだったとでも言っておきましょうか（実は出番少なくて、あんまし覚えてない ^_^;） 。
さて、この映画最大の話題といえば、やっぱりそのワイヤー・アクション。今は編集の時、簡単にワイヤーを消せるようになったので、ワイヤーでぶらさげアクター達が飛ぶわ飛ぶわ…。でもね〜、人間離れして飛ぶんだったら、もうちょっと幻想的にして欲しかったなぁ、というのがうるさいファンである私からの意見。特に溜め池を飛ぶシーンや、竹林でのシーンは正直ちょっと興覚めしてしまいました。何かもうヒトひねり欲しかった！！！
一方地面でのアクション・シーンにはまぁまぁ満足できた私です。特に私が好きだったのは、シューリンとイエンの２回目の対決シーン。シューリンがイェンの持つグリーン・ディステニーに対抗して次から次へと剣や槍をとっかえひっかえに使うところは、もうコミカルでさえありました(^_^;)。ホントはこの辺のアクション・シーンはアン＝リーの手柄というよりも、コリオグラファーであるユェン＝ウーピンの手柄なんですけどね。う〜ん。
まぁ、この映画に関してはちょっと期待が大きすぎましたね（アレ？どっかのお芝居と同じかな？？？）。知りすぎた人（？）が絡んでいると、ついつい辛口になってしまう私の性格ってのもあるし(^_^;)。
フツーに見れば勿論素晴しい作品ですよ。期待しないで観ればきっとウレシイ驚きが沢山あると思います。最後になりましたがこの作品、今年のカンヌでは特別上映、NY映画祭ではクロージング上映として絶賛を浴びました。2000年度タイム誌が選ぶ映画ベスト10では堂々の第1位、LA批評家賞では見事最優秀作品賞に輝いています。このまま行けば、外国語映画賞であれ、作品賞であれ、ゴールデン・グローブ賞ノミネートは確実でしょう。オスカー・レースにどこまで食い込んでくるのかが今から楽しみです。
For me, it'd been 5 years to wait for seeing this film. In 1995, when the original classic Chinese story "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon", which was banned in Taiwan, was finally released there, Ang Lee asked James Schamus, who's been producing his film, to adapt this story into a screenplay. At that time, I was taking Schamus's class and was tutoring Japanese to a PHD student, who lives in the same apt where Schamus lives. He asked her to translate the story into English in order to write a synopsis. That's how I indirectly got to know how they started making "Crouching Tiger..." 5 years ago.
To talk about the story, I see he changed a lot from the original. The basic spin is two love stories of a warrior, Mu-Bai (who owns the "Green Destiny") and a female warrior, Shu-Lien (who once engaged Mu-Bai's best friend, died long time ago), and Jen (who loves a bandit Lo but is going to get marry, which was arranged by her parents). Jen is actually another warrior, who is almost as strong as Mu-Bai and Shu-Lien (The protagonist of the original was Jen). Those four and the enemy, Jude Fox show us incredible wire-action scenes throughout the film.
To be honest, I thought, the story was not well constructed. Was it because there were three writers? I wonder... I actually kind of liked the desert scenes, which was too long for one of my friends who saw it with me. However, I couldn't be excited in the beginning and the end. I don't know how to say...but I felt missing of "tension" or some "excitement" in the whole film. It's totally OK that those relations of the two couples are quiet. That's how the Asian couples are. But even though their relationships are quiet and even forbidden, there must be a way to show some tense in that kind of relationship anyhow, right?
Moreover, although I liked that the story was not totally in the Good and Bad formula, I thought the character of Jen was not really working. It doesn't matter that if she is a thief or not, or if she makes a mistake because she is young. But there got to be something strong to tidy her up anyhow as a character. Also, what was the conclusion bet Mu-Bai and her?!!! (Am I too bitter???)
Most of all, I have to say that I was very disappointed by how it ended. I was like..."That's it?" (Actually, they showed the last shot in the US trailer. So I'd seen the shot already!) It's OK to be a poetic ending, but I wanted it to be with a better idea somehow. (I guess I expected too much for this film ^_^;)
About the casts, there were not many scenes with Yun-Fat Chow!!! (although his role was much less important in the original story.) Not only his love to Shu-Lien but also the passion to Jen as a master, I had a hard time to feel them in him. I think it was Ang Lee's fault unfortunately. Those characters in his films are always too passive!!! Nevertheless, it worked for Shu-Lien to show the gap bet her modesty and her incredible actions. Of course, to talk about Michelle Yeoh, you cannot ignore her amazing action performance without a body double. And, she can even act and is beautiful like hell. I don't have a word to prize her enough.
And, yeah! Ziyi Zhang was great! Although her acting was not good yet, we could see that she made a great effort for those action scenes. Of course she had a body double for some part, but in some other parts, which obviously she was doing by her own, she was pretty good to manage the Green Destiny. About Chen Chang.... I'd say he was charming. In fact, I cannot remember about his acting very well (^_^;)
So... let's see. Of course, I have to talk about the wire-actions, which people are talking about most of this film. I was actually not satisfied by that, because those flying was so far away from what a human being can do (like flying over a pond or flying at a bamboo bush). In that case I wanted him to make it with some dreaming atmosphere. You know, something not like real something magical.
On the other hand, I was more satisfied by those action scenes on the ground. My favorite action scene was the second match bet Shu-Lien and Jen. It was even funny to see Shu-Lien getting a weapon and another weapon in turn to attack Jen with the Green Destiny. In fact, the person who should proud of those scenes are not quite Ang Lee but Woo-Ping Yuen, though...
As I wrote already, the worst thing for me was I longed and expected for this film too long and too much. Plus when I know someone who relates a piece (film, play, whatever), I'd always get better and tend to underestimate for that piece. Generally, I think this film could be said a good one, and for someone who doesn't expect anything before, it gives him/her a great surprise.
Since it won for the best film of the year at LA critic award and Time magazine (and at National Board of Review as the best foreign language film), I bet it'll be at least nominated for something (don't know for the best foreign or best picture) at Golden Globe Award. And, it'll be very interesting to see how it'll do for Oscar next year.

いや〜、「男は顔じゃない」んですね。何だかそんなことを実感してしまった映画です。実を言うと信じられないかもしれませんが、私、ビートルズが歌っているトコロって、曲の最初から最後までちゃんと見た事が生まれてから一度もなかったのです。ホントにこれが初めて。「あ、ジョン＝レノンってギター弾くんだ？」なんて感覚で観てましたから（^_^;）。でも、この映画観てやっと、どうして彼等があんなに人気があったのか、何となく分かった様な気がしました。
まず第一に彼ら、本当に音楽が好きなんだな〜と思いました。何てたって、楽しそうに歌ってる。きょうびのバンド・ミュージシャンってむす〜っとしながら歌ってる人達が多いじゃないですかぁ。多分彼等はそれが“かっこいい”と思っているんでしょうけど（^_^;）。
なる程〜、ビートルズってのは、スタイリッシュでチャーミングな人達だったんですね。曲もやっぱり引きつける〜（今、頭の中“A Hard Day’s Nightでいっぱい ^_^;）
まぁ言ってみれば確かにこれは単なるアイドル映画。映画それ自体の出来は極めて退屈なモノだったけど、少しでもビートルズが好きな人なら大画面で観る彼等ってのはかなりお薦めかもしれません。音響も全てデジタル再生しているだけあって良かったです。
Believe or not, this was the first time for me to see them singing a whole song. Hadn’t even seen John Lennon was playing a guiter （^_^;）.
Of course this is just like a music video, but, with the stylish, charming, and talented Beatles, I have to say I was pretty much attracted to it. Can’t get rid of the song “A ahrd Day’s Night” from my brain~（^_^;）.

この映画、「ブレアウィッチ・プロジェクト1」の前に作られていたら、もっと絶賛されていたんじゃないでしょうか？脚本＆監督を担当したクリストファー＝ゲストが「ブレアウィッチ」を真似したのでも何でもないことは誰が考えても明らかなことですが、映画公開のタイミングって良くも悪くもやっぱりありますよね。
さて、この映画のどこが「ブレアウィッチ」っぽいって、それは全遍がドキュメンタリータッチで描かれているということ。内容はホラーでも何でもないのですけれど…。
ストーリーはフィラデルディアで行われる架空の（多分現実には存在しないと思うのですが、100％確かではありません）ドッグショーに参加する４組＆１人計９人のインタビューを交えたドキュメンタリー風ドラマ。ゲイカップルも居れば、おかしな夫婦もいて、言ってみれば有りがちなストーリーなんですけれど、面白きはその会話の妙と犬達のご活躍。最後のクレジットを見てみると、どの犬達にも壮壮たる名前が付いているのでおそらくプロ（？）の犬達なんだと思います。予告編にはドッグショーの部分ばかりが出ていたので、もっとドッグショーの部分が中心なのかと思っていましたが、意外とショーの部分が少なくてがっかり。でもこの映画をきっかけにして、ちょっとドッグショーにも興味が湧いてしまいました。
キャストの有名所は、インディー映画の女王（？）パーカー＝ポージーと、今期から「Ｘファイルズ」でジュリアン＝アンダーソンのパートナーになったマイケル＝ヒッチコック。でもこのカップルが一番つまらなかった様な気もします（^_^;）
最後に、犬達のオーナーに子持ちが一人もいなかったのはちょっと不思議。それとも現実的に子供のいないカップルが子供代わりに犬を可愛がるっていうのが主流なんでしょうか、やっぱり。犬に妬きもちをやく子供の存在ってのもちょっと見てみたかった気がしますが…。
ちなみにこの作品、今年度ゴールデン・グローブ賞コメディorミュージカル部門の最優秀作品賞にノミネートされています。
If Christopher Guest made this film before "Blare Witch Project", he could have been praised a lot more I bet. Such a poor guy... Of course nobody thinks he ripped off "the docu-drama cheap indie film" idea from BWP, though. It was clever and funny, but actually nothing remained in my mind.
The biggest winners of the film were obviously the dogs. Although they didn't have to "act" like Lussy or something, I’m sure their performances were more than perfect than what the director wanted. Though they showed a lot of shots from the dog show at the previews, the portion of the shows was not a lot in the whole movie. I wanted more scenes from the dog show. It was quite interesting.
One thing I was wondering about was why we never saw any dog owners with kids. Is it because most of dog owners who have kids don't care about dogs as much as owners with no kids? I really wonder…
"Before Night Falls"

「バスキア」でデビューしたNY出身のアーティスト、Julian Schnabel監督の第２作目。正直「バスキア」にはがっかりした私だったので、この作品には全く期待していませんでした。けれど…全然違いました、この作品。ホントに同じ監督？って疑っちゃうくらい。まず第一に映像がキレイ。このお話（いつも話の紹介が後回しになっちゃいますね）、政治犯として国を追われたキューバ出身の詩人＆作家Reynaldo Arenasの自伝を映画化したモノなのですが、この映画を観るだけで彼がなぜそんなにもキューバという国にこだわり、そして愛したのかを見せつけられている様な気がしました（撮影はどうやらメキシコで行われていたらしいのですが）。
そしてオスカー・ノミネートの呼び声も高いジャヴィアー＝バーデムの演技。私の場合は、演技というより、彼の存在感そのものに魅かれてしまいました。立っているだけでもうゲイの男性達にモテモテという感じ。実はこの映画、最初は近所にあるアンジェリカという映画館へ観に行ったらチケットがすでに売り切れていたので、チェルシーにある映画館へ観に行ったのです。そこは所謂ゲイ・ネイバーフッドのすぐ近くでして、周りゲイのカップルばっかでした。う〜ん、彼って実はスパニッシュの映画にはもう何本も出ているベテラン俳優さんなのですが、私にとってはこれが初めて彼を観た映画なので、印象がこの役に固まってしまいそう(^_^;)。とにかくインパクトのある役でした。
「バスキア」でも、アーティストと彼を取り巻くサポーター達のお話が綴られていましたが、この映画もその基本は同じ。でもバックグラウンド（「バスキア」はNY、「Before...」はキューバ）が違うだけで、こんなにも違う映画が出来てしまうのですね。
脇役陣が豪華であるのも、このJulian Schnabel作品のいわば一つの特徴と言えるかも（「バスキア」では、デビット＝ボウイがアンディ＝ウォーホルの役を演っていました）。今回この映画には、ショーン＝ペンとジョニー＝ディップがそれぞれちょい役で出演しています。う〜ん、ショーン＝ペンうますぎ。最初暫く「アレ、この俳優さん、ショーン＝ペンに似てるなぁ」と思ってしまったくらいです(^_^;)。ジョニー＝ディップの方は、ドラッグ・クィーン姿でご登場なのですが、お尻が色っぽい〜（別にそこだけに注目していたのではありません。お尻のアップシーンがあったので ^_^;）。
まぁ、こういったスター出演もあるし、ジャヴィアー＝バーデムのオスカー・ノミネートは堅そうなので、この映画日本でもじきに公開されると思います。お楽しみに。
Because I didn't really like " Basquiat ", I wasn't expecting much for this film directed by the same director as his second feature (which was good I guess). So I was pretty surprised at the difference bet "Basquiat" and this film. I wonder if the background made these films totally different. You know, the stories are almost identical. They're about an artist / a writer 's short lives and people around them.
The Cuban images in this film were beautiful (although they couldn't shoot them in Cuba), and I kind of got the reason why Reynaldo Arenas longed for his hometown so much despise of what they did to him.
As everyone says, Javier Bardem seems to get at least a nomination for the Oscar. I was, first of all, knocked out by the aura he has. Just by standing, 10 gay men fall love into him I bet. Actually, I saw this film at Chelsea (because the tickets were sold out at Angelica), so most of people around me were gay couple. Anyway, I wonder if I can get rid of the Reynaldo's image from him, next time when I see his other roles...
Same as "Basquiat", you see some cameos in this film as well. When Sean Penn appeared on the screen, I was even thinking "Woo... he looks alike to Sean Penn"（^_^;）. And the Drag-Queen Johnny Depp was mysteriously beautiful (they shot a close-up of his butt, which was so...beautiful^_^;) .
Anyway, hope I'll see Javier Bardem walks on the red carpet with a tuxedo at the Oscar night!
