現役の映画監督としては、一番のお気に入り監督フィリップ＝カウフマン、ナント7年ぶり待望の新作。
前作「ライジング・サン」では見事に大ゴケしていましたが、今回は一応彼のお得意分野復活ということで、それなりの作品に仕上がっています。私の場合、なぜ彼がお気に入り監督なのかと聞かれれば、それは彼独特の「ヨーロピアン・グロテスク＆ウィアードネス」の映像。今回は青が基調になっていたので、「存在の耐えられない軽さ」や「ヘンリー＆ジューン」（これはどちらかと言えば赤だったかも）の様にセピア色を基調にした映像の方が好きな私には、いささか不満な部分もありましたが。まぁ、それはソレ。少なくとも後一回は劇場で観ると思います。

The director, Philip Kaufman, is definitely my favorite director, among those who are still making films. This is his first film after "Rising Sun", which failed at box office and was quite bad 7 years ago. However, because the genre of this film is what he is good at, it came out much better than the previous one.
The reason why he is my favorite is that he is great at creating the atmosphere of "European grotesque and weirdness" in a film. Compare to his other films such as The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and "Henry and June", whose basic color tone was sepia, I wasn't satisfied with the color tone of this film, which was blue. But I, still, think I will go to see it at least one more time.

舞台は、革命直後の血塗られたフランス。投牢されたマルキード＝サドと、彼を取り巻く人達の物語。タイトルの「Quills 」は、当時使われていた鳥の羽で出来たペンのことです。
サド役のジェフリー＝ラッシュは、新聞・雑誌評ではかなりの評価を受けていたものの、私にとってはいま一つだった感じ。あの「シャイン」での素晴しい演技はどこへ行ってしまったのでしょうか？ケイト＝ウィンスレットは、良くもなく、悪くもなく、相変わらず優等生の演技をしていました。

The story takes place in France right after the revolution and is about Marquis de Sade and people around him.
Although Jeffrey Rush got good reviews at newspapers and magazines, I wasn't quite moved by his performance. I haven't seen his great acting after "Shine". What happened to him? Kate Winslet was not bad at all but not so great, either.

で、意外だったのがホアキン＝フェニックス！彼の演技は「Inventing the Abbotts (1997) 」系のヤナ奴的印象が強かったのですが、「グラディエーター」から、「おっ？なかなかイイ？」とちょっと注目し始めていました。いや〜、この映画での彼、最高でしたよ。ケィト＝ウィンスレット扮するマデリーンとの淡い恋（でも彼は牧師さんだから結ばれてはイケナイのです）なんか超カワイかった（特に前半）。はっきり言って、ジェフリー＝ラッシュなんかよりずっと良かったりして(^_^;)。
マイケル＝ケーンもいまイチ。でも、その若妻役を演ったAmelia Warner！もう赤マル急上昇、期待の新人です。去年「マンスフィールド・パーク」で、彗星の様にデビューしたと思ったら、今年だけで出演作品５本という売れっ子ぶり。いいです〜。好きです〜。イノセントでいて小悪魔的な所もあるシモーンの役を好演していました。

But, I was surprised by the Joquin Phoenix's performance! For me his image was from the character of "Inventing the Abbotts" (1997), who is just a mean good-looking guy. Then, when I saw "The Graduator", I kind of liked his performance.
He was great in "Quills"! Especially, he was so cute, when he was with Madeline (Winslet). Because his role is a priest, he cannot get together with her. I would say, he was much better than Jeffery Rush in this film.
Unfortunately, Michael Cane was not so good as usual, but Amelia Warner, who acted his wife was so attractive! I believe she debuted in "Mansfield Park" and now she got offer from 5 films in a row. I like her very much. She was perfect for Simone, who looks innocent but has a heart of an elf.

これもやっぱり一般的にはお薦め出来ない映画なんですけどね。なにしろフィリップ＝カウフマンの作品ってのは、いつもカット・カットをすくってみるといい映像なんだけれども、話全体のリズムが悪い。観終わった後にサバサバしないのも、彼のまとまりのないストーリー運びを物語っているのかも。う〜ん、つくづく監督サンというのは、マルチな才能を要求されるのだなぁ、と思います。
ただこの映画、”アンチ「恋に落ちたシェイクスピア」”の皆さんには絶対にお薦めです！（私の周りは”アンチ”ばっかし^_^;)。作家としてのW・シェークスピアとM・サドが対照的であったのは勿論のこと、何より「恋に…」への当て付けつけじゃないか？と思ったのが、サナトリウムの患者を使って行われた映画「フリークス」張りの自主上演シーン。コレ、「恋に…」の上演シーンが茶番にしか見えなかった私にとっては、かなりやってくれたシーンでした。

Same as any other films, it's hard to recommend this film to everyone. Especially, films by Phillip Kaufman are always loose rhythms in the second half of the story, although to see a shot by a shot of his films seems quite beautiful. It is so hard to be a perfect director who is good at everything.
However, I would definitely recommend those people who hated "Shakespeare in Love"! (People around me are mostly "anti-Shakespeare in Love"...) No need to say, W Shakespeare and Marquis de Sade were opposite as writers. Besides that I thought the stage scene with those sanatorium patients, which reminded me the film "Freaks", was almost opposing to the stage scene from "Shakespeare in Love".

この映画、一応限定上映として始まったのですが、一館当たりの動員数が、今冬一番のヒット「グリンチ」を抜いたということで、来週から上映館も大幅に拡大されることになりました。
不作で大混戦のオスカー・レースに食い込んでくるんじゃないかという噂もありますが、一般ウケはどうなんでしょう。私はけっこう「オタク向け映画」だと思いますけどね…(^_^;)。

This film opened at limited theaters, but because they got more audiences than "Grinch" per screen last week, they've decided to expand more theaters from following week.
Some people say it could be one of the Oscar contenders... I think is pretty a culty film, though...

"Sasayaki" 「月光の囁き」 ***3/4

1999年、ロカルノ国際映画祭オープニング上映、トロント映画祭正式出品作品。日本国内でも高崎映画祭、ゆうばり映画祭をはじめ数々の賞を総ナメにした作品です。
いや〜、実はこの作品、私全くのノーマークでした。（タイトルくらいは聞いたことあったのですが）なので、何でいきなりアメリカ公開？？？と思っていたのです。で、作品を観て納得。

アメリカでは「珍しい日本のサド・マゾ映画」なんて〜のがウリだったから、ちょうど今公開中のサド・マゾ韓国映画（というと身もフタもないのですが…。それだけじゃないですよ）「Lies」に合わせているのかな？なんて思っていたのですけれど。そんなにオドロオドロしくもない青春映画でした。実は最近矢口史靖監督の「アドレナリン・ドライブ」とか、ちょっと古いけど橋口亮輔監督の「渚のシンドバット」系がこちらの映画マニアの間でちょっとした人気（ちゃんと一般公開もされました）になっていたので、配給サイドとしてはその流れもあるんだと思います。

It was screened as an opening film at Locarno International Film Festival and also was selected to an official competition film at Toronto International Film Festival 1999. In spite of that and it got a bunch of prizes in Japan, I'd never really heard of this film besides the title.
Because I heard it is a kind of "Sade-Maso" story, I was thinking it's a Japanese version of "Lies" (a Korean abangard sexual film I'd say). However, it was totally a different kind of film, and more likely to "Adrenaline Drive"(1999) or "Down the Drain"(1993) by Shinobu Yaguchi, who is now pretty popular among Asian film buff here.

原作は喜国雅彦氏の同名漫画。この漫画自体、谷崎潤一郎をモチーフにしていると言いますが、おそらくその中でも「痴人の愛」なんかがベースになっているんでしょうか。実際、「痴人の愛」は「Naomi」という英題で翻訳本も出ており、こちらで日本文学を勉強する人達の間では、かなりポピュラーに読まれている本です。西洋では「O嬢の物語」とか、女性といえばマゾの方が一般的だから、この作品や「Lies」の様に女性がサド側に廻るモノは珍しいみたいですね。

It is based on a comic book by Masahiko Kikuni, which is inspired by novels by Junichiro Tanizaki. I'm guessing that "Naomi" is the one, which influenced this story most among Tanizaki's books. Interestingly enough, female characters in "Sasayaki", "Naomi", and "Lies" are all Sadists not a Masochist like in "The Story of O".

舞台はとある高校の剣道部。最初は普通に付き合い出した拓哉と紗月が、ひょんなことからギクシャクした関係になり、次第にお互いの「本性（？）」に目覚めていくというお話。
でも、コワがることなかれ。基本的なトーンは、「渚のシンドバット」にも通じるような青春モノ（あの映画もホモセクシャルのお話でありながら、カワユイ青春映画に仕上がっている所が似ています）。特にラストがかわゆくて好きでした。（アメリカ人の友達にはちょっと難解だったらしいけど---以下、ネタバレパートに書きますね）あと、全遍通して話されていた関西弁（どこのモノかは私には分かりませんでしたが）も、全体の雰囲気をを柔らかくしていたのかもしれません。

The story takes place in a high school Kendo club (Japanese fencing) somewhere west in Japan. Takuya and Satsuki started dating as a normal couple, but as his fetishism reveals their relationship turns to "Sade-Maso" relationship.
Nevertheless, the basic tone of this film is quite optimistic like "Down the Drain". I think it was lead by the directors taste and also the western dialect helped to soften the atmosphere of this film.

でもまず何と言っても、主演の二人が超キュートだったことが、この作品をクラくないモノに出来た大きな要因でしょう。
水橋研二クンは「やわらかい肌」等、これでもう長編映画４作目。けなげな姿をイヤ 味なく演じていました。そして、この映画の要とも言える紗月役に抜擢された（これが映画第一作目！）のつぐみチャンの存在感！！！
またまた国際級の女優サンが誕生してしまったのですね。いや〜、よくまぁこんなに フォトジェニックで演技も出来る男優・女優サン達が、次から次へと出現して来るモ ンです。彼女この後すぐに3本の映画に出演していますね。やっぱり皆眼のつけどこ ろは同じって感じで…。

Especially, I have to mention those extremely talented leads, who also made this film fresh.
Kenji Mizutani (Takuya) has been acting three other films before this film. His cutie performance made this character away from a weird fetish guy. And amazingly, this is the first film for Tsugumi (Satsuki), who gave us such an attractive performance. We’ve found another upcoming international female star. Can't believe so many talented actors coming up from one to the next recently. No wonder she's been appearing three other films right after this film.

この映画自体、誰にでもお薦め映画とはあまり言えませんが（でも私は好きでした）、間違いなくこの塩田監督、これからの日本映画界期待の一人として注目する価値はありそうです。

This film itself, I wouldn't recommend to see to everyone (I really liked it, though), but, I can say for sure, the director, Akihiko Shiota, is definitely one of the new Japanese directors, whom you should check out.

まず最初に、ラストシーンで、紗月が眼帯をしてたのは何故でしょう？コレ、誰か分かる方いますか？私も友人から聞かれたのですが分かりません。
それと、ラストで「マルなんとか（役名忘れました。拓哉の親友の役です）と一緒に海に行こうね」という彼女のセリフの意味が、アメリカ人とかにとってはちょっと高度な感覚だったようです（つまり、二人の心はもう許しあっているんだけれども、彼女はあくまでも”女王様”であって、“一緒に海に行こう＝デートしよう”とは口が裂けても言わない…という）。私にとっては、これはけっこうパーフェクトな終わり方だと思ったのですが、お国違えば文化も違うということで、アメリカ人にとってはいたって不満の残るラストだった様です（^_^;）。

"One Day in September" ***3/4

1999年度、アカデミー賞最優秀ドキュメンタリー賞受賞。1972年ミュンヘン・オリンピックで起きたイスラエル選手団に起こった悲劇を描いた衝撃作。私はミュンヘン・オリンピックでこんな事件が起きたなんて全く知らなかったので、この映画の結末にはもの凄くショックでした。
オリンピック競技真っ最中の1972年9月５日未明、イスラエル選手団の宿舎をパレスチナ・テロリスト集団「黒い９月」が襲います。要求は、イスラエルにいるパレスチナ人の政治犯釈放。最初は正午にセットされた期限が午後５時になり、それも決裂に終わって選手団とテロリスト達は空港へ…。

まず、たった一人生き残ったテロリストのインタビューが衝撃的。彼は事件直後、別のハイジャック事件によって釈放され、帰国後、母国パレスチナでは英雄になりました。
当時のミュンヘン市長やドイツ警視総監に加え、殺されたイスラエル選手の未亡人、そして当時赤ん坊だった娘も今は大きく成長してそのインタビューに加わっています。
ドキュメンタリー作品としても、重鎮な編集、CGを使った空港での銃撃戦再現シーン、マイケル＝ダグラスの落ちついたナレーション等、非常にプロフェッショナルな出来に仕上がっています。

First of all, I had no idea what would happen the end, so I was very shocked about the conclusion. Cannot believe it really happened and I never knew it!
The significant part of this film was they got the last terrorist from “Black September” for the interview. (God, he was such a good looking when he was young, by the way) He was a hero in Palestine, which is hard for me to accept after all those innocent people’s death. They actually showed all dead bodies in this film from the police record, which I didn’t think it was necessary. Gee…
Anyway, with all those professional editing, CG scenes, which recreated the shooting with Michael Douglas, it totally makes sense to me that it won for the best documentary at Academy 1999.
