「ウィークエンド・ラヴァーズ」で5年前にデビューした、Ye Lou監督の第２作目。自身が上海出身であることもあってか、この映画では、私の知っている上海とはまるで違う、「住む人にとっての上海」が淡々と描かれていました。
ジャンルとしては、”メロドラマ”でしょうか。私はコレ系が大好きなので、後半はか
なりヤラレました。それなりにツイストもあるし、前半はMTVっぽかったり「ドグマ95」っぽかったりして、スタイルばかりに眼が行ってしまうのですが、後半はけっこう”フランス映画”というか、ちょっぴり”演歌”もしています。
The director is Ye Lou, who shot his first film, “Weekend Lovers”, 5 years ago. You can see Shanghai in this film as a place where people live, it may be because Shanghai is where the director came from.
The genre of this film is “Melodrama”, I would say. Since I love this kind of film first of all, the last 30 min stroke me a lot. Although there are a couple of twists in the end, some MTV kind images, and “Dogma 95” styles in this film, it’s like a French film or the Japanese “Enka” (country music) world towards the end.
上海を流れる"蘇州河"の脇に住む主人公は、ビデオカメラマン。彼がこの映画の中で自分の姿を現すことはありません。彼のいる場面ではカメラが必ず彼の目線になっていて、もの凄く揺れまくります。この揺れ方は、ラス＝フォン＝トリアー監督を初めとする「ドグマ95（”照明を使わない”、”カメラは全部手もち”等、いくつかのルールを守って撮影された映画のこと）」にも通じるモノがあります。前半は少しウォン＝カーワイを思わせる部分もあるし、ま、弱冠35歳の新人監督ですから、自分のスタイルが固まってくるまでにはまだ余裕もありますよね。実際、後半は完璧に彼の世界って感じでした。
The protagonist, who makes his living as a videographer, lives near by Suzhou River. We actually never see him in sight throughout the whole movie. When he is in a scene, we see everything through the camera, which shakes a lot as his POV. It reminds me the way of shooting of Lars Von Trier’s “Dogma 95” a lot. And also you see that he is influenced by Wong KarWai’s style as well. However, you see more his own style towards the end of the film. Now he is only 35 years old, so I’m sure he’ll fix his own style very soon.
お話は、主人公が撮影を頼まれた「人魚ショー」で人魚を演じるMeiMeiと、彼女にそっくりな恋人をかつて失ったMarderの物語。
まず、MeiMeiを演じるZhou Xunにハッとさせられてしまいます。この映画の成功は、彼女なくしてはあり得なかったのでは？と思うくらいフォトジェニックな女優さんです。また一人、中国映画界に期待の新人誕生ですね〜。それから、Marderを演じたJia HongShengも良かったなぁ。彼の朴訥さは、本当にチャーミングでした。
The story is about MeiMei who makes herself living by a mermaid show and Madder, who lost his girlfriend who looks exactly like MeiMei. The protagonist meets MeiMei shooting her in the mermaid show.
Zhou Xun, who acted MeiMei is amazingly photogenic and I cannot imagine this film’s success without her. I bet she will be one of the biggest new Chinese star very soon.
I also loved Jia HongSheng who acted Marder. His simplicity was quite charming to me.
今思い返してみるとこの映画って、他にキャラクターらしいキャラクターが出てこないんですよね。とにかくこの二人とカメラ目線で登場する主人公の３人だけで、話が延々と進んでいくのです。
でもまぁ、ナント言ってもこの映画の主人公は河。最初と最後に全く同じ場面が出てくるのですが、この８０分余りのストーリーが間に挟まることによって、まるで全然別の河に見えてきます。
全体的に暗〜い映画ではありますが、私のように演歌系の好きな人にはおススメの一本です（^_^;）。
To remember the whole story, I realized that there are no more characters in this film. The story basically goes with only those two and the protagonist behind the camera. Needless to say, the main character of this film is the river. We see the river in the beginning and the end, and it looks totally different with seeing this 80 min of whole film.
I have to say this is a kind of depressing film, but if you like Asian melodramas like I do, this is a must see film.

今年の2月に一旦公開されたものの、批評家受けがよく（興行的にはペケでした）、年末のショーレースに参加しょうということで、先々週から再上映が始まりました（最近のこういった作品には、「ラッシュモア」や「エレクション」等があります）。
確かに好きな映画でしたけれど、う〜ん…アカデミー作品賞という感じではなかったですね。ゴールデングローブや批評家賞のノミネートあたりには入ると思いますけれど（でも、作品賞ではなく、主演男優・監督賞・脚本賞あたりかな？）。
It was originally released in February but didn't go well at box office. However, it re-opened in NY and LA two weeks ago as a nomination contender for critic awards like "Rushmore" or "Election" had done.
I basically liked it, but... I don't think it's an Oscar type of movie. I would bet for the nominations for Golden Globe or Critic Awards, though. (Not for best picture but for Best Actor, Best director, or best screenplay I guess)
監督は、あの「LAコンフィデンシャル」のカーチス＝ハンソン監督。さすがに堅実な演出を見せてくれます。スキがないっっ。原作はMichael Chabonの同名小説で、脚本は「恋のゆくえ」で監督＆脚本を務めたSteven Kloves、ナント７年ぶりの新作です。脚本はけっこうまとまっているな、と思いました。GGとか、他の批評家賞のノミネートくらいには入ってくるでしょう。主演は、つい3日前NYで挙式をあげたばかりの（関係ないか）マイケル＝ダグラス。共演にトビー＝マグワイヤ、ロバート＝ダウニーJr、フランシス＝マクドーマント、ケィティ＝ホルムズ等豪華な顔触れです。
The director is from "LA Confidential", Curtis Hanson, who directs actors very well as usual. It is based on a novel by Michael Chabon and adapted by himself and Steve Kloves, who directed and wrote "Fabulous Baker Boys".
I thought the screenplay was well written, so it'll provably gets at least nominations for GG or those critics awards.
The lead is Michael Douglas who just got married in NY 3 days ago. Co-stared with Tobey MaGuire, Robert Downey Jr., Frances McDormand, Katie Holmes.
マイケル＝ダグラスは、良かったんですけどね。でも、脚本と演出が良かったから、あの状況下なら誰でもあそこまでいい演技ができたんじゃないか（つまり、彼一人のお手柄ではない）、というのが私の意見。トビー＝マグワイヤは、すでに”タイプ・キャスト化”されてて、「またこういう役？」って感じなんですけれど、私は好きだからなぁ、彼のこと。個人的には「アイス・ストーム」や「サイダー・ハウス・ルールズ」の時より好きでした。
ロバート＝ダウニーJrはね〜、別に好きな役者さんではないんですけど、やっぱりいい味出してます。フランシス＝マクドーマントは格別いつもより素晴しいというわけではなかった感じ。ケイティ＝ホルムズも好きな女優さんですが、まぁまぁって感じでした。彼女に関していえば、「アイス・ストーム」の方が良かった。
Michael Douglas did good job... but I don't think it was all his job. Because it was directed by C Hanson and the screenplay was well written, any OK actor could go that level I suppose... Tobey MaGuire is now getting type casted, but I love him anyway... Actually I liked this role better than in "The Ice Storm" or "Cider House Rules".
Robert Downey Jr. is not my favorite actor, but I have to say he was good in this movie as usual. I didn't find Frances McDormand particularly good comparing to her other movies. Katie Holmes is one of my favorites, but I preferred her in "The Ice Storm".
今頃ストーリーですが、「ワンダーボーイズ」とは”神童”という意味。かつて若かりし頃、神童ともてはやされ、今はとある大学の文学部でライティングを教える大学教授グレィディ（ダグラス）と、そこに生徒としてやって来るもう一人の神童、ジェームス（マグワイヤ）の物語。妻に逃げられ、愛人サラ（マクダーマン）は妊娠。女生徒（ホルムズ）からは言いよられるが、自分の作品に関しては、彼女からキツイ批評を受ける。また、出版者でもある友人テリー（ダウニーJr）が訪ねてきて、自宅はいつのまにかパーティ会場に…。伏線として、マリリン＝モンローがジョー＝ドマジオと結婚式をあげた時に着ていたガウンの行方なんかが出てきて、この辺りのエピソードはかわいらしくて好きでした。
The story is about Grady (Douglas), who used to be called a "Wonder Boy", teaches writing at a college, and James (MacGuire) who is his student and another wonder boy. Grady has been left by his wife and his lover (McDormand) has just got pregnant. One of his student (Holmes) flattered him but she also critics his writing in a sever way. Terry (Downey Jr.) who is his publisher and also good friend of his visits him but Terry has a junk party at his place....
As an underplot, we see a story of the Marilyn Monroe 's gown which she was wearing when she got marry to Joe Domagio. It was cute.
このお話の中心テーマは、やはりグレィディとジェームスという二世代間の友情、そしてグレィディとテリーの友情なんでしょうか。多分原作では、グレィディとサラの恋のゆくえも大きいのでしょうけれど、この映画の中ではいまイチ光っていなかった感じ。監督が、男同士の友情を描く方がうまい（「LAコンフィデンシャル」みたいに）からってことなのでしょうか？
この作品、日本ではビデオももうすぐリリースされる予定ですので、興味のある方はどうぞ。
The main theme of this film seemed "friendships" (bet Grady & James and Grady & Terry). It seems like it was the relationship bet Grady and Sara in the original novel, but it didn't strike me enough in this film. I wonder if it's because this is directed by Curtis Hanson who is good at depicting male friendship like in "LA Confidential".
This has been already on video in US. So if you haven't seen it, check it out.

候孝賢（ホウ＝シャオシェン）と並ぶ台湾の国際的２大映画監督の一人、楊徳昌（エ ドワード＝ヤン）の最新作。今年のカンヌ映画祭では、最優秀監督賞に輝き、今年の 東京国際映画祭でもシネマプリズムの上映部門でオープニング上映された作品。エド ワード＝ヤンは、「恐怖分子」や「クーリンチェ少年殺人事件」、フランスで話題を 呼んだ「カップルズ」の監督としても有名です。
The latest film by Edward Yang, who is the most famous Taiwanese directors internationally besides Hsiao-hsien Hou. He won for the best director at the Canne film festival this year, and this film was the opening film at the Tokyo international film festival (at the Cinema Prism screening) this year. He is known as the director of The Terrorizers (1986), A Brighter Summer Day (1991), and Mahjong (1996), which was popular in France.
まず、上映時間ほぼ３時間。前日は３時間の睡眠時間で観に行ったのですが、途中全く 眠くなりませんでした。お話自体は何のヘンテツもない中流階級の一家族の日常。平 凡なサラリーマンと、変わらぬ日々に疑問を抱き始めたその妻、多感な高校生の娘、 隣に住む彼女と同じ年頃の女の子とその彼氏、ひたすら人々の後ろ頭を撮り続けるい じめられっ子の息子、若き日に別れた昔の恋人との再会、出来ちゃった結婚でハデな 嫁をもらったばかりの弟、彼等の結婚式から植物人間になったままの義理の母etc... ただただ彼等の日常が淡々と語られるだけなのです、基本的には。
The running time is almost 3 hours. I only slept 3 hours the previous night, but I’d never felt I was sleepy while I was watching this film.
The story is about daily lives of a regular middle class family in Taipei. A boring businessman, his wife who started wondering about her life, which goes exactly the same way as the previous day, his high school daughter who is in the middle of her adolescence, her friend who lives next to her and her boyfriend, his son who is harassed by his classmates and keeps taking pictures of peoples back heads, an ex-girlfriend who he was dating when he was in college, his brother who just got married because his girlfriend got pregnant, and his mother-in-law, who is in coma since his brother’s wedding… There is nothing excite about in their lives basically…
こんな下手するとただつまらないだけの映像を、ぐいぐいと見せつけるこの監督の力
は非凡です。まず、その映像の美しさ。ちょっと気を付けてみないと分からないので
すが、けっこう普通の人が撮ったら絶対に撮らないようなアングルで撮られている絵
が多いです。この「一見、気が付かない」という所がポイント。例えば北野武監督の
ように、見るからに変わった撮り方をしている作品は分かりやすいのです。あんまり
パターン化すると飽きちゃいますけどね。（別に私はアンチ北野派ではありませんが
…^_^;）
それから、これは台湾映画の特徴でもあるのでしょうか？候孝賢が多用する”長回し
シーン”もあることはあるのですが、今回この作品では、特に前半部分パッパッと場
面が素早く展開されていきます。前半分の内容、けっこう”濃い〜”ですよ。
I must say Edward Yang is a genius to keep us watching this kind of story without feeling bored at all. First of all, those shots in this film are so beautiful and shot from his extraordinary point of view and angles. However, they’re hard to notice unless you have some attentions to the shots. That is the whole point I’m saying he is a genius. Like to see Takeshi Kitano’s film, it’s very easy to find some extraordinary visions of him because he does it in an obvious way. However, it also easy to get bored, when you get used to his pattern of shooting. (I’m not an anti-Takeshi fan, though…)
In the first 30 min, you will see a lot of quick shots, although you also see a lot of long shots, which, as you know, Hsiao-hsien Hou is a famous for. I wonder if it’s a typical way of shooting for a Taiwanese film…
「いい映画」の影には、常に「いい役者」の影あり。この映画の役者の中で一番光っ ていたのは、いじめられっ子の息子役を演じたJonathan Chang（漢字分かりませんが） でしょう。（8歳くらいかな？やっぱりコレがデビュー作なんでしょうか？）彼の演技ともつかない独特な存在には、アメリカ人の観客も揃って顔をほころばせていました。期待の新人です。主演の呉念真（ウー＝ニェンジェン）は、好みが分かれる所でしょう。私は格別凄い俳優さんだなとは思いませんでしたけど。娘役の金燕玲（エレン＝ジン）は好きでした。
You can always find great actors when you see a great film. For me the best actor in this film was the son (around 8 years old?) played by Jonathan Chang. It was hard to tell if he was acting like that naturally, though, he was so cute and so unique. I’m looking forward to seeing his next film.
I wasn’t particularly impressed by the lead actor, Wo Nian-Zhen, but I loved Elaine Jin, who acted his daughter.
そして、日本人の私としては注目のイッセー尾形さん（取り引き先の日本人ビジネス
マンを演じていました）。う〜ん、ま、良かったんですけどね。彼はいつもいい演技
をする人だと思うし、楊監督も彼に合わせてキャラクターを作った（変えた？）んじゃ
ないかと思う所もチラホラあったのですけれど、でも彼の魅力はあんなモンじゃない、
というのが、私の正直な感想でした。でも、かなり印象的な役だったので、カンヌを
通してこれから各国の監督さん達からお呼びがかかる様になるのは必至だと思います。
（彼自身、ロンドンやNYですでにひとり芝居を何回か公演しているので、知る人はす
でに知っているのですが…）
日本の方達にとっては、映画の何分の一かを占める日本での撮影シーンも、注目の一
つですよ。
For me as a Japanese, it was great to see the Japanese actor, Issei Ogata (who acted a Japanese businessman). He is known as a sketching comedy actor not only in Japan but in NY or London. I thought he is usually even a better actor on stage, but well… he was pretty good in this film as well. I hope I’ll see him more on screen near future.
Also, it was great for me to see those scenes, which were shot in Japan.
まぁ、ハリウッド・アクション映画がお好みの方には、「一体何の話だったの？」と 思われてしまう映画かもしれませんが、ふと「映画の原点に還った映画」を見たくなった時、また「毎日繰り返されるだけの日常」についてシミジミ感じてみたくなった時（？？？）には、おススメの映画です。何か、よくわかんないですね…(^_^;)。
Well… some of you who prefer Hollywood action films, I wouldn’t recommend to see this film. But if you want to see a film, which tells what is a film, this is a film to see. Or when you wonder about your life, which repeats exactly the same way like yesterday. This is a must see film. Woo… , I don’t know what writing about… Anyway, hope you’ll have a chance to see this film.

「現在NYで公開中の映画リスト」で書きました様に、今年のサンダンス映画祭で監督賞（および観客の選ぶ最優秀作品賞）を受賞した作品。まず最初に、「どうして監督賞？」という疑問が湧きました。この作品で長編デビューしたKaryn Kusama（日系ハーフ？）監督、はっきり言って”スキだらけ”です。特に最初の３０分はちょっと間延びしているし、この映画のハイライトであるはずのボクシングシーンの盛り上げ方も、決してうまいというわけではないのです。
でも好きでした、この映画。久々にさわやかな「青春映画」を観た気がします。
As you guys already know, this film won for the best directing (also the best picture) at Sundance film festival this year. To be honest with you, I don't understand why it got "best directing award", because I don't think Karyn Kusama (a half Japanese?), who directed a feature for the first time, got an "extreme" talent. Especially the first 30 min of this film is a kind of dull and the boxing scenes, which are most anticipated, are not so dramatic or exciting...
However, I loved this film. I felt I saw "a fresh yourth film" for the first time from long long time ago.
内容は、NY市のプロジェクト（低所得者層に提供される公共アパート）に住む”ケンカっ早い”高校生のダイアナが、弟のボクシングコーチであるヘクターに頼み込んで入門し、段段とボクサーとしての頭角をあらわしていくという、オーソドックスなストーリー。そこにこれまたオーソドックスなラブストーリーが織り込まれて行きます。
一応複雑な家庭背景も出てくるんですけどね。この部分についてはきちんと消化しきれていなかった感がありまました。
The story is about a wild high school girl, who lives in a project of NYC, starts to be trained boxing by her brother's trainer. Of course, she'll get stronger and stronger as the story goes by. In between the fighting scenes, we also see her love story, which is, I have to say, nothing new.
Also, it includes a complecated story of her family, however, I don't think it exploited enough in the story.
まず、この映画の最大の成功の秘密はキャストでしょう。主役のダイアナを演じたMichelle Rodriguezは、彗星の様に現れた新人ですが、この映画の成功によって、すでに来年公開予定２作品の映画に出演が決定しています。
血の気の多いボクサーとして、動物的なまでの”眼”で睨む時の彼女と、１７歳の少女として好きな男の子の前ではにかむ彼女はまるで別人！！！私がこの映画で好きだったシーンは、ボクシングのシーンよりもむしろ彼女とエイドリアンの”かわいらしい恋愛シーン”でした。ここ最近、こんなにティーンの”はにかみ”を表現し得た映画があったでしょうか？いや〜、彼女かわゆいです。たとえ筋肉がムキムキになっても、眼のまわりにアザが出来ても。
The biggest winning point of this film is the casting. Michelle Rodriguez, who acted the lead, Diana, was totally a new actress. But she already got offered at least 2 films for the year 2001 with this film's success.
Her eyes as a boxer, which are like a wild animals' and her eyes when the guy who she loves is in front of her are totally diffrent and are even opposit!!! I actually loved those cuty love scenes more than the boxing scenes. I don't think I've seen such a film, which shows a teenager's shyness better than this film recently. God, she is so cute, even though she becomes macho and got bruices on her face.
そして私がもう、近年になく「いい役者っっっ！！！」と惚れこみ抜いてしまったのがコーチ役のJaime Tirelli。明らかにヒスパニック系の俳優さんで、今まではどちらかと言えばテレビ中心の活動をしていました。この映画で注目されて、今後映画に引っ張り出されることは必至でしょうね。
そしてダイアナの恋の相手、エイドリアンを演じたSantiago Douglasもけっこういい味出していました。彼、決してハンサムではないんです。だから、最初は何とも思わないタダのボクサー。でも、ストーリーが進むにつれ、どうしてダイアナが彼に恋してしまうのか、心情的に凄く分かってくるんです。何だか「愛すべき男」に見えてきちゃうんですね。これってやっぱり監督の力量なんでしょうか。
And most of all, Jaime Tirelli, who acted the trainner was one of the greatest actors I've seen these years. He is obviously a hispanic actor and appeared mostly on TV before, but I bet he'll appear more in film soon.
Santiago Daouglas, who acted Adrian was pretty good as well. He is not goodlooking at all, so when you see him first in the beginning of this film, he is just one of the boxers at the gym. But he gets more attractive as the story goes, and you'll see why Diana loves this guy. I wonder why if this was the director's magic...
