November 16th – 19th, 2000
Official Site: http://www.yrd.com/nyexpo
Dedos by Beatritz Anton / 9 min, color, Spain / ****
Lovely finger dance shows. You can never imagine how much fingers can “act” from a “Show Girl” strip show to a “Saturday Night Fever” dancing! The costumes for fingers were amazing, and the lighting & sound totally made the fingers like movie stars.
America by Savas Karydas / 15 min, color, Greek / ****1/2
A street cleaner who once in the Elia Kazan’s film “America” as an extra, finds the film is showing his town at a theater. This film gave me totally a different impression of people in Greek, who are always under the blue sky. (I thought this film was shot in Russia!)
It was well shot and the acting was good… but I felt something was missing. I have to say, in terms of screenwriting, this was the best film of all I saw in this festival, though.
Lost Girl by Ji Won Shin / 42 min, B & W, USA / **
About a French girl who has just come to the US, has no friend except an African American boy. It was so looooong… It could have been shorter to less than 30 min I think. Those kids were great, but nothing was really happening in this story. Although this film was more focused on the psychological part of the boy and the girl, we couldn’t see anything in the end.
Easy Money by Phillipe Dussol / 18 min, color, France / ****1/2
Amazing running shots!!! This was much more thrilling than “Run Lola Run”. The story was simple, which was good to show this skill of shooting. A couple of bank robbers run away from police with roller-beadings. Just run, run, and run… but you never get bored.
Day and Arabian Knight by Francesca Galesi / 13 min, color, USA / ***
A night of a lonely middle age woman and a immigrant guard man. There was nothing wrong was this film, but also there was nothing surprising about this film. It was cute but just another well done short.
I. D. Citizen by Diego Velasco / 24 min, color, Venezuela / ***1/2
A Latin MTV comedy with colorful stylish images. It reminded me “That’s the way I like it” from Singapore. The main character was cute and others were funny. The B & W scene of city hall also reminded me the office scenes from “Ikiru” by Kurosawa.
Le Fetichiste by Nicholas Klein / 23 min, color, France / ****
A shoe fetish guy meets another shoe fetish girl. The boy wasn’t so cute but somehow pretty loveable. The girl was actually dazzling. Although the story didn’t go anywhere in the end, I kind of liked this film.
Walking Mele by Anne Misawa / 25 min, color, USA / ***
About a forbidden brother and sister… I liked the poetic part of this film, but the story also didn’t go anywhere. The image was pretty unique, which was a mixture of Hawaiian, Hispanic, and West American. The director is Hawaiian Japanese, but interestingly, I didn’t see anything like Japanese in this film.
Eve by Paula Parrish / 7 min, color USA / *
Another dizziness video art film. So what???
- - -All of them were, in fact, really really well shot, but unfortunately, it seemed too hard for those filmmakers to give some points in the end. Because of the missing points of the stories, I, as a writer, couldn’t quite satisfied with most of the films - - -
"The Uncertainty Principle"
Director: Ted Kim / Producer: Madeline Chang
16min, Columbia University
"One Day Crossing"
Director: Joan Stein / Producer: Karen Severns
25min, Columbia University
I went to a film festival of Asia American Journalists Convention (AAJC) at Times Square and saw 3 great films among the 6 films they'd showen.
"Civil Wrongs and Rights"
The first one was called "Civil Wrongs and Rights", which was about Fred Korematsu, who opposed US government as not a Japanese but an American during WWII. He lost his case in 1944 but won after 40 years the war was ended. I've been writing about Japanese-American people in the camps during WWII, so I'll write more about this topic some other day. If you're intereted in Korematsu's case, please see the web site above.
"Life Tastes Good" was a humorous tale of a Japanese-American guy in San Fransisco, which was shown at Sandance Film Festival last year. Directed by Philip Kan Gotanda, who is well known as a playwrite and also wrote a screenplay of "The Wash".I met him last year at the Asian American Film Festicval and think he'll be one of a prestigious J-A filmmaker in near future. If you're interested in this film, please see the web site above.
The last one, "Asian Pride Porn" was hilarious!! It makes fun of Asian couples in a porn film in a very clever way. The director/writer, Greg Pak is one of the most gifted filmmakers I've ever known in my life. He's got everything; good looking, education at Yale and Oxford, directs at a sketching comedy group and the Asian-American filmmakers workshop, and most of all, he's got the talented beautiful wife, Keiko Ibi, who won for an Oscar in 1999. Check him out at www.gregpak.com !
Can't believe this is my first day... Now you see I wrote "Just can't stop writing" in my profile...
